SEO has changed a lot, and the easiest way to understand it is to think of it as a series of “eras”. Each era was shaped by one big question.
1) The “Keyword” era: “Can search engines even read my page?”
In the beginning, search engines were basic. They mostly looked at obvious signals like page titles and repeated words.
So people asked:
What keywords should I put on the page?
How many times should I repeat them?
Should the keyword be in the title and headings?
Back then, SEO often felt like “fill in the blanks.”

2) The “Links” era: “Can I prove my site is trustworthy?”
Search engines then realized something important: not every page deserves attention.
So they started looking at links like recommendations:
If lots of good websites link to you, you must be worth visiting (in theory).
New questions showed up:
Who is linking to us?
Are those links good quality or spammy?
Why do competitors have more links than we do?
This is when SEO began to feel like reputation building.

3) The “Content” era: “Are we actually answering the question?”
As more businesses published content, Google had to separate helpful from useless.
So SEO became less about stuffing keywords, and more about meeting search intent.
People started asking:
What is the person really trying to do when they search this?
Does our page answer it clearly, or is it fluff?
If someone lands on our page, do they stay, scroll, and take action?
This era rewarded clarity.

4) The “Experience + Technical” era: “Is our site easy to use and easy to crawl?”
SEO expanded into performance and usability:
speed, mobile friendliness, structured data, broken pages, messy navigation.
Teams began asking:
Is Google having trouble crawling or indexing our site?
Are we slow on mobile?
Do we have duplicate pages confusing search engines?
Is our site structure helping people find what they need?
SEO started to look like “website health plus content quality.”

5) The “Local + Reviews” era: “Do we show up where real people make decisions?”
For many businesses, Google Maps and reviews became just as important as the website.
New questions:
Do we show up in the map pack for our main services?
Are our reviews strong, recent, and consistent?
Do we have the right categories, services, and photos set up?
How do we compare to nearby competitors?
SEO became about your real world presence, not just your website.

6) The “AI” era (GEO): “What does AI think and say about us?”
Now we are in a new chapter. People still use Google, but they also ask AI tools.
Instead of scanning 10 links, they want one good answer.
So the questions shift again:
When someone asks ChatGPT or Gemini about our service, do we appear?
Does AI describe us correctly, or does it get things wrong?
What sources is the AI using when it mentions brands like ours?
Are we being cited, recommended, or ignored?
This is where GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) comes in. The goal is not only to rank, but to be included in the answer.

The Google guide for AI GEO and SEO best practice methods.

SEO has evolved from:
“Can I add the right keywords?”
to:
“Can I earn trust and prove I am the best answer?”
and now to:
“Can both humans and AI understand me clearly enough to recommend me?”

If a customer searched for your service today, would you show up?
If they asked an AI tool for the best option, would you be mentioned?
If they found you, would your website make the next step obvious?
If they checked your reviews, would they feel confident choosing you?
